Matthew's been paying attention in school. "I'm a Texan and an American." Personally I think he's got those in the right order. I like the streak of individualism here. "You may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas." (My mother and mother-in-law both said that if Texas were ever to secede they would move here. Hey, I'll take grandparents near us any way I can get 'em.)
Nothing embarasses Melissa. I went in to help her clean up after a number two (she does a ... less than adequate job on her own) and she informed me, "Toilet paper you can blow your nose. Toilet paper you wipe your bottom. You can blow your nose and wipe your bottom!"
"Stick to doing one at a time, Melissa," I told her.
Matthew was nicknamed "Peanut" by his mother shortly after birth. How shortly, we're not really sure anymore; within the first few sleep-deprived days is all we remember. Matthew never did go through that period of sleeping all the time that baby books tell you newborns are supposed to have. Since his first abnormally alert days he's just become more and more active, and at some point his uncle Grant conferred upon him the moniker Savage.

Stealth cops
Unmarked police cars are not sporting to begin with. Now there are unmarked _SUVs_ pulling people over.
That's just not right.

A close call
There are 4 music stations I can listen to in San Antonio: one each of classical, rock, alternative, and metal. Everything else is pop, latin, or country. My favorite is the alternative station; I like most of what they play but it's not stuff I've heard a thousand times. (Except for when they sometimes play country. Sorry guys, country is not "alternative." Especially not in Texas.)
But a couple days ago I'd turn it on in the morning driving in to work and get some latin crap. What the hell? I switched back and forth unhappily between the other stations. When I got closer to work I tried it again and this time I got the alternative station.
I thought some other station must have started up and was overpowering the poor little alternative college-radio transmitter.
But last night when I got the latin I decided to wait for the station ID to see what was going on. When the song ended the DJ started interviewing the singer, some fairly popular guy from Brazil who's won a few awards. (Although he's not that popular -- I tried to google him based on knowing that his first name was Alexander, he's from Brazil, and he's on tour in the US now including SA this weekend. I failed.) So the latin crap was from this guy's latest album to promote his tour. Presumably Monday all will be back to normal.
Whew.

State Pride
Some recent school work Matthew brought home:

The writing is a bit faint, but in the picture to the right Matthew labeled the different cowboy accoutrements.
The booklet on top was like a "Brown Bear, Brown Bear..." for Texas. Each page had something unique to Texas such as the state tree, flag, flower, seal, Alamo and so on.
Today Matthew recited a jumbled history of the Alamo. It's kind of amusing to hear how things are processed in a 6 year old's mind. Reminds me of the game telephone.
The school's mascot is a cowboy, and there are lone stars, boots, and flags decorating the halls. Each afternoon I watch the color guard take down Old Glory along with the Lone Star.
